Apple removes "Bang With Friends" from the App Store

Apple removes 'Bang With Friends' from the App Store

After less than 10 days on the App Store, Apple this past week gave the boot to “Bang With Friends”, an app that seemingly runs afoul of Apple’s efforts to keep the App Store as reasonably wholesome and free of smut as possible.

In case you’re unfamiliar, “Bang With Friends” is an app that seeks to match up Facebook users with friends who share a common interest in, oh, how shall I phrase this, amorous relations.

This past weekend, “Bang With Friends” co-founder and CEO Colin Hodge confirmed the app’s removal with Valleywag. Hodge did, however, note that he’s currently working with Apple to get it back in the App Store.

While it stands to reason that the app was removed due to its mature nature, Hodge says that Apple hasn’t yet given him a reason as to why the app was removed.

Interestingly enough, TechCrunch this past Friday ran an article detailing how Zynga — the purveyors of the ever popular “Words With Friends” app — recently served the developers of “Cupid With Friends” with papers indicating that the name of their app infringes upon Zynga’s trademark.

Zynga’s letter reads in part:

Zynga has consistently used and promoted the ‘WITH FRIENDS Family of Trademarks together as a family and, as a result of Zynga’s extensive marketing efforts and commercial success, the ‘WITH FRIENDS Family of Trademarks is strongly identified by consumers with Zynga’s reputation for quality.

That being the case, perhaps its also possible that the removal of “Bang With Friends” has something to do with Zynga’s efforts to protect its intellectual property.

That theory is somewhat flawed, however, to the extent that the app is still available for download on the Google Play store.

In any event, while Apple’s App Store rejection and approval process is no longer the hot button controversy it once was, every so often Apple gives us a little reminder of its desire to keep the App Store clean. For instance, Apple this past January temporarily removed the popular photo-based 500px app due to concerns that users could too easily use it to search for nude photos. One week later, the App was reinstated after developers added a new feature enabling users to flag inappropriate content for removal.

Apple’s 50 billionth app contest winner saved up five app purchases

Apple's 50 billionth app contest winner was saving five app purchases

21-year-old Brandon Ashmore of Mentor, Ohio has a lot to smile about as the winner of a $10,000 gift card from Apple for being the person who downloaded the 50 billionth app from the App Store. Ashmore told NewsChannel5 in Cleveland that he had saved up five apps to download onto his iPhone 5 to try to win the contest, and thought he was being pranked when an Apple rep called him to relay the good news.

Ashmore finally believed the caller, saying that the Apple employee had “too much information” about him. The winning app was Say the Same Thing by SpaceInch, LLC, a free word game that has been floating around the Top Free Apps list since it was released in April of 2013.

So what’s Ashmore going to do with his $10,000 gift card? He refers to the credit as “free music, movies and books for life.”

Daily iPhone App: Mosaique is an original and inventive puzzle game

Mosiaque is a very original puzzle game that I haven’t quite figured out yet. It appeared on the App Store a little while ago from a company called Winning Blimp, and the core idea of the app is that you need to clear the screen of colored squares by firing them in from the sides.

The issue, however, is that if the square you shoot in hits a square of another color, it will switch out instead. Squares of the same color get cleared off, so your goal is to try and fire squares of the same color together, lining them up and clearing them off the board, refilling your meter for more shots. Mosiaque is the kind of game that’s simple to play, but fairly tough to master — even with the playtime I’ve put in, I’m not completely sure how deep the game’s strategy gets. But there is a solid amount of fun to learning the game’s mechanics, and as you play through the levels, there are some new tricks, too. Eventually, black blocks show up which will block your shots, and “void” blocks will appear that keep your shot meter from filling back up if not cleared right away.

Mosaique is a lot of fun, and it’s very original, both in look and in gameplay. It’s worth noting that there are no in-app purchases in this one either. Buy the game for 99 cents, and you’ll have access to the game’s unlimited parade of levels. That should be more than enough to get you figuring out exactly how it all works.

Apple ups the promotion for its 50 billion app download contest

Apple ups the promotion for its 50 billion app download contest

Apple last week announced a new contest leading up to the 50 billionth downloaded app. The lucky person who downloads the 50 billionth app will receive a US$10,000 gift card redeemable on the App Store. What’s more, Apple will also be awarding $500 App Store gift cards to the folks who download the first 50 apps after the 50 billion threshold has been reached.

Today, Apple boosted awareness for the contest by promoting it on their Apple.com homepage. The homepage currently features a revolving series of photos which aim to illustrate just how big the 50 billion mark is.

For instance, the photo above of the Great Wall Of China is accompanied with the tagline, “With 50 billion bricks, you could build 12 Great Walls of China.”

Other photos include a snapshot of Earth, accompanied with the tagline, “With 50 billion steps, you could walk around the Earth more than 800 times.” There is also a photo which notes that “counting to 50 billion would take you 1,600 years.”

As it stands now, the countdown meter on Apple’s website says we’re at the 49.6 billion download mark.

Apple continues to crackdown on recommendation apps

Apple’s crackdown on apps that violate the new recently debuted 2.25 clause of the App Store Guidelines has expanded according to a report by PocketGamer. The rule states that no app can copy functionality from the App Store to promote purchases for apps other than their own. Clause 2.25 lead to the death, and subsequent redesign, of AppShopper into it’s current social media focus. AppGratis has not been so lucky. However, as a developer rejection sent to PocketGamer explains, more apps may soon be on the chopping block.

The rejection supplied to PocketGamer specifically cited apps that “include filtering, bookmarking, searching or sharing recommendations” as verboten for not being different enough from the App Store itself. None of those four provisions are officially listed in clause 2.25.

This extension of the app store guidelines further closes users off from apps that supply recommendations outside of the ones found in Apple’s own store. Given the controversy surrounding what some consider AppGratis’ gaming of the system for profit, Apple’s move could be a matter of shoring up its own rankings and keeping possible manipulation off of the charts.

However the developer of the app in question told PocketGamer their app is just for sharing recommendations with friends. Therein lays the problem. According to the developer:

“Our app is primarily focused on sharing recommendations to your friends. I have not seen this rejection notice before and believe that it is a new one. We thought that basing our recommendations on sharing was suitable for Apple, as it had previously stated that if you bake in social or local into your app discovery, you would be fine.

However, either we are not social enough, or Apple is going back on its position. Either way, it appears the scope of 2.25 continues to grow and I think they aim to be the only provider of recommendations for apps, along with being the distributor.”

The developer who sent the rejection to PocketGamer has chosen to remain anonymous at this time. Hopefully Apple will work with developers to clarify the expanding guidelines for recommendation apps.

Daily iPad App: Eclipse: New Dawn for the Galaxy is a great board game adaptation

Daily iPad App Eclipse New Dawn for the Galaxy is a great board game adaptation

Eclipse is one of the most popular board games around right now — it’s a vast, involving epic “4X” game, where those four Xs stand for eXploration, eXpansion, eXploitation (as in mining crops and resources from various planets), and eXtermination (as in finishing off your alien opponents). It was recently announced that Big Daddy’s Creations would be adapting the game for iPad, and the iOS version has now arrived on the App Store, available for $6.99.

As a board game, I think Eclipse is terrific — it’s very well balanced, and all of the various things you can do offer plenty of different strategies to play with. There are three resources (money, science, and material) that you can use to exert your influence on various areas of a galaxy, research new technologies for starships or your empire, or build up those ships and other various structures to combat your enemies. The game’s almost endlessly flexible, in that you can try to win over the game’s nine turns in any number of ways.

The drawback here, however, is that all of that flexibility and complexity make the game, well, complicated. This is not a casual game by any means, and while the iOS version’s interface is fairly good at converting all of the information you need into a visible, touchable form, it’s not very good at actually explaining what all of that information is. So when you’re confronted by 30-50 icons on screen at the same time and asked to choose one, the game can be overwhelming to say the least.

Still, if you like great board games and are up for a challenge, Eclipse is excellent. And if you’re already familiar with the board game, then this might end up becoming one of your favorite games on the App Store. My only other complaint is that there’s no real “metagame” to it — winning or losing the various games you play doesn’t matter much in the larger picture at all. Still, Eclipse is an incredible adaptation of a brilliant board game, and it comes highly recommended. Even at the price of $6.99, it’s one of the best board game apps out there.

Wonderputt creator Reece Millidge talks about the upcoming, beautiful Icycle: On Thin Ice

Wonderputt creator Reece Millidge talks about Icycle On Thin Ice

I saw the upcoming iOS game Icycle: On Thin Ice back at GDC, and I think it was the best game (out of maybe fifty or more) that I saw that week. Reece Millidge is an animator and game developer based in Britain, and I first came across his work while playing the Flash version of an abstract putting game he made called Wonderputt. Millidge has a wild sense of design and pacing, and both of those skills make Icycle: On Thin Ice one of my most anticipated iOS games of the year in 2013. Just recently, Millidge kindly responded to a few questions from TUAW, talking both about his history on iOS so far, and what to expect in his upcoming release.

Wonderputt arrived on the App Store last year, and Millidge says it was quite successful. He’d “heard from publishers that mini golf games on mobile were not popular like they were on the browser. So from that kind of feedback I never expected it to go far.” But it reached #1 paid app on the UK charts, and has since not only matched the Flash version in financial success, but has seen over 100,000 paid downloads.

That kind of success has obviously encouraged Millidge to release another iOS app, and Icycle: On Thin Ice is a game based on another Flash title he did, simply called Icycle. But On Thin Ice is not only designed for a touchscreen, but it has lots of new content as well. “Icycle, the Flash version, and Icycle: On Thin Ice are two completely different games,” Millidge tells us. The title will have a new story, new levels, and new power-ups to play with, with lots of new abilities for the game’s hero (a naked man on a bicycle named Dennis). “The only thing that has remained from Icycle, really,” says Milidge, “is Dennis himself.”

On Thin Ice will also be made into a Flash version of the game, but Millidge says the iOS version will have “extra content, levels, and in-app updates.”

Icycle’s basic story sends Dennis exploring through a post-apocalyptic ice age, and while the original game simply played around with various icy landscapes, On Thin Ice has a much wider scope. The game begins with a fantastically animated James Bond-esque title sequence, and early on, Dennis is clunked over the head and has to make his way through an abstract art-inspired dreamland, exploring paintings like Magritte’s Son of Man and other works. Millidge says his influences come from all over the place. “I’ve mainly taken inspiration from illustrators who work in vector art, but also from some of the masters in minimalist print and poster work such as Charley Harper,” he says. “Russian propaganda and Art Deco travel posters are also a favourite.” He says English cartoons like Monty Python and Yellow Submarine are a big influence as well.

The bicycle mechanic was inspired by an old BBC Micro game, according to Millidge, called Dare Devil Dennis, and there are some other fun references in Icycle that refer to that old retro title. But the idea of making the guy on the bike naked while wandering through a freezing landscape is all just about “maximising empathy,” Millidge says. “That and a cruel sense of humour, of course.”

I was so impressed with the short time I had with Icycle: On Thin Ice at GDC, and I can’t wait to see the finished game. Chillingo is publishing, and Icycle: On Thin Ice should be out and available on the App Store soon.

Blockbuster on Demand app now available

Blockbuster‘s been going through a bit of a reinvention over the last few years. It’s retail stores are closing in staggering numbers as the company refocuses on becoming a streaming rental service with Blockbuster on Demand. Today that quest becomes a little easier with the service’s debut on iOS devices, via a free app.

The Blockbuster on Demand service allows you to stream from a library of thousands of HD movies, including new releases. While the app is free the service requires you to pay by the film and lacks an a la carte option like those found on Hulu or Netflix. When the service’s mobile app launched for Android it lacked HD video support for mobile devices, but that shortcoming has been fixed in the iOS version. You can find the app in the iTunes store now.

Apple posts 50 billion app countdown

The race to 50 billion is on.

Just about a week after Apple announced that the App Store had crossed 45 billion downloads, Apple has decided it’s high time to launch an official countdown towards the 50 billionth downloaded app.

The lucky winner will receive a $10,000 gift card redeemable on the App Store. Apple has run similar app download countdowns in the past, but this year it has decided to share the wealth a bit more. In addition to the aforementioned grand prize winner, Apple will be doling out $500 App Store gift cards to customers who download the next 50 apps once the 50 billion mark has been reached.

Apple posts 50 billion app countdown

The current tally is about 49.2 billion downloads. Just 800 million more to go!
